What happens to all those wasted bags and bows, and paper wrap? 

Between Thanksgiving and New Years, Americans produce an extra two billion pounds of garbage per week, much of which is gift packaging including paper wrap, bags and bows.  If 40% of US households reduced their holiday paper consumption by just two sheets this year, the savings could gift-wrap Manhattan Island! 1 

Because of the large quantities of ink used in printing and the low quality of the paper fibers, regular paper wrap is often not recyclable.  Nor is most gift wrap made from recycled materials.  2

How are  you making a difference by using less paper?

Paper is made mostly from wood pulp, which is made from trees, and water.  Paper is the most common form of waste.  Much of it can be recycled, but that still means more energy has to be used to reprocess it.  Using less paper means saving energy, trees, water and the chemicals needed in the manufacturing process.  Trees are important because they prevent erosion, and they absorb carbon from the air and turn it into the oxygen we breathe. 1
